I won’t go in to the nitty-waxy-gritty of it, but it started the morning after my mother-in-law died when I woke up deaf in my right ear. After about 10 minutes it cleared up. Same thing happened every morning for the next few […]

Coming from Los Angeles, I can tell you, it’s very different here in NYC.
As I enjoy the “community” feel here, and you’d think it would be much easier to network because it’s such a smaller area to cover, I’m not sure that’s the case. Finding my way in has proved to be more difficult then expected.
In LA, I did a 2 hour workshop with a mid- sized Agency and only pay 35.00. Here it seems to be more towards 200.00 for one night. I was one of 2 people chosen out of 20 to be represented by them. It’s hard to understand that 18 other people would pay 200.00 and not get an agent out of the deal.
* Question: Do Actors in NYC pay this amount of money and do these workshops?
* Question: Also, is there a list of mid-sized NY agencies that a reputable? I just learned the good one’s from the bad one’s during my 10 year experience in LA. But being a newbie in NY I don’t know much about squat.
Hey Gina,
Thanks for posting.
Where did you go that charged that much? And what kind of seminar was it?
I was under the impression that a 3-hour seminar was usually only about $35 (at Actors Connection or One on One, for example). I’ve heard of a higher rate for weekend classes or all-day affairs, though, which might be why you spent so much? But I agree that it sounds a little hefty – and scam-y – price-wise!
You know, there isn’t a good resource that lists specific-level agencies here. There’s just the one listing with EVERY single agency in town including some of the less savory ones (find it at Actor’s Access). I’d also recommend going to a seminar at SAG/AFTRA if you are a member – sometimes they have great industry guests that give good updates like that and it’s always free. I will also look through my notes from one such seminar I went to a few years ago and see if my own agency list is still relevant. Stay tuned.
I hope that’s helpful. Please feel free to ask me more questions anytime. I also recommend asking me through my tumblr page as that is a great area for other people to chime in. Here’s the link: http://thenycactor.tumblr.com/ask
